After a gorgeous Friday & Saturday, it's back to dreary, cold, windy winter weather here for us this Sunday. So bleh... but what can you do...? Except, maybe, indulge in the good stuff... And as we all know, you and I, my dear visitors, are all bookaholics and story-junkies who live for the next great read.
And, we all also know that some of those next great reads get spotted right on the Six Sentence Sunday list every single week!
I don't know where my contribution falls on that spectrum, but I hope I manage to bring you a nice reading moment and a few thrills with my romantic suspense/espionage thriller tidbits.
Speaking of thrills, where were we with this one, Before The Morning (Corpus Brides: Book 2)?
Last week, most of you learned (finally! I could hear a lot of you say that, lol!) who Irina really was... a clandestine undercover secret agent sent to rid the world of her "husband", Russian mobster/crime lord Nikolai Grigorievskiy.
A spy always works off a well-laid plan, where everything is settled down to the last detail. There are also contingency plans, in case a wrench happens to hurdle these best-laid plans. But what happens when that wrench takes the form of your childhood best friend, the man you have always loved, and whom you haven't seen in seventeen years? What to do now? Stay in the part and complete your mission, or face up to the turmoil clenching the heart you thought you no longer had?
Read on for what Rayne, my super-spy from the Corpus, does in this situation:
'...
Ash had recognized her; for a second, she'd thought
her cover was blown. Then, she'd taken a deep breath and forced herself to
remain in character: never panic, always stay in control, breathe, and gather
your wits—the first lesson drilled into the mind of any secret agent. Pulling
on a blank face was one of her fortes, and Ash had bought the act—he thought
she was Irina, a clueless twenty-year-old from the dirt-poor suburbs of Moscow
who didn't speak any language other than Russian.
She'd had a few close encounters in the past, but
never like that; Rayne and Kali each had separate, compartmentalized lives that
ran parallel—the two should never have touched, because that would end up
making a mess of her. She could keep each persona separate, as long as she pushed
Rayne to some dark corner of her mind. Her job taxed her, and she walked the
tight line of paranoia every single second while undercover, but if Rayne
came to the front during a mission . . . . ...'
Don't forget to check the rest of the SSS list - amongst them Jessica E. Subject, Siobhan Muir, Lorraine Paton, Christine Warner, Lia Davis, Sue, Wildcat's Wife, Jess Schira, Kate Warren, Graylin Fox, Gemma Parkes, & Monica Enderle Pierce, among many others.
Thank you for dropping by today! Your support and nice words mean the world to me! XOXO
From Mauritius with love,
Zee

I love this story so much! In this six, the intensity of the situation is shown, but at the same time, we experience Rayne's level-headed thinking in a potentially dangerous situation. Well done! :)
Thanks Jessica! I really wanted to be 'her' while I was in her head - glad if that came through :) XOXO
Very tense! And I love the way she pulls herself together.
Why do I get the feeling that her control is about to unravel? Fascinating 6.
Thanks Lisa! :) xoxo
Lol Jess - because she's about to break down, that's why! :)
She's an interesting character...your writing always draws me right in Zee...wonderful six.
Very tense and intriguing. Your description is how I always imagine a spy's life must be - great six!
Tense six! The girl has nerves of steel!
Enjoy your Sunday :)
Love your six, Zee! So much conflict and tension - both in this moment and to come! And, I love that she can look like a 20 year old even if she isn't. :)
Thank you for the mention! You are wonderful.
What great introspection from her and so cleanly put together! It really put me into her head. Fantastic job of showing how conflicted she feels!
Wonderful six Zee.

What to do, what to do???
It's a good thing she's been trained, because if it were me, the gig would have been up and I would be dead! LOL
Keep it up girl, can't wait to read more!
Christine, she's been my most challenging character to date! :)
Glad the writing swept you in - I loved hearing that! xoxo
Thanks Veronica! I cannot count how many hours of spy stories in TV and movies that I've watched and analyzed, and all the books and articles I've read on the clandestine life to put this one across. Glad if it 'sounds' real :)
Lol Carly - she does! She'd be toast otherwise! :)
Have a lovely Sunday too! xoxo
Thank you Lorraine! And looking like a 20 yr old when she's 34? The magic of filler and implants with modern plastic surgery, lol! XOXO
Thanks Mae! It was my goal to get my reader into Rayne's head - glad if I managed that! :)
Thanks Sherry! xoxo
Lol, MJ - you and me both! Some of the things Rayne does, I trembled from the other side of the screen just imagining the danger! xoxo
Really, really good Zee!
I like the quick calculations she makes and how despite running into the only thing that could blow her cover, or force her to blow her cover, she kept it together. It's admirable in a character. Great inner monologue.
not easy to let slip her real persona. Yes you got it - as always. Hot summery long week end here.
Awesome six, Zee. What a great description of the game she's playing. Well done. Thanks for the mention, too! :)
Oh, I love this almost split personality you've made her adopt. Fascinating!
Terrific. I'm glad to see that her training is holding true and that she's not rattled. That would put them both in danger.
Great peek into her thoughts! Today's theme in SSS seems to be 'best laid plans'!
I've got the Rayne/Irina thing but I'm lost on Kali. I think I may need to go back and read some previous sixes.
Love the intensity in this, and her determination to hold on, though clearly frazzled. Wonderful work, as always, Zee.
Thanks Karysa! :)
Thanks JM. I thought this long and through, and wanted to show her character, her nerves of steel, as someone mentioned above, through this. She's also a super-efficient agent, and that needed to come through. :) xoxo
Lol Sue. Enjoy the sun for me, will ye? :)
Thanks Siobhan! I love anything spy-related, and had a blast writing this one :) XOXO
Lol Monica! At one point, even Rayne asks herself who she's supposed to be. Poor girl, not easy for her too :)
Elin, that would definitely put everything in jeopardy. Like she mentions at one point, the whole world was counting on her to take Nikolai out, and she couldn't fail.
Lol Angela! That's serendipity, I suppose :)
Lol Kate! Let's see if I can make that clearer.
Just like James Bond is known inside MI6 as 007, Rayne Cheltham is known as Kali inside the Corpus agency. On this mission, she is undercover and posing as Irina. :)
Clear as mud? *grin*
Aww, thanks Cate! XOXO
Love your heroine, Zee! She's my favorite kind! Great six!
Thanks Jennifer! xoxo
I love spy stories! And, this one has romance. What a great character. Good six!!
Lol, Wildcat's Wife! Yup, this spy story also has romance... and action, comedy, family drama, some rather quirky characters :)
