I'm waving hello from under the snuggly quilt on my bed. Temps getting chilly here, and though you European&US lot laugh at me when I say the temps tip in at around 18C/65F here right now, and that this is what spring is like for you, trust me - in the tropics, that is chilly weather! And we're not in winter yet! Thank goodness there's brilliant sunshine to keep the spirits up.
Speaking of keeping spirits up, what's better than visiting blogs and reading tantalizing snippets & excerpts, aka, what Six Sentence Sunday is all about? Join me for another few lines from Before The Morning (Corpus Brides: Book Two), which comes out next Monday, btw, May 7... *excited*
Last week, we left our hero just as he made a startling discovery - the woman he's just saved looks so much like his childhood best friend. He hasn't seen her in ages, so is it her, or not?
We move a page or so from where we left off - Ash, in true hero/knight in shining armour fashion, has gone up against the woman's lover, the man who hit her right in front of everyone. It took a policeman to tear the two men apart. Ash refuses to leave before the bloke allows him to check on her - Irina, as she is called.
They're in a room in the house now; Ash has made her sit down, and he is checking on her injury. Yet, recognition is flooring him...
'...
No matter how much she reminded him of Rayne Cheltham,
she wasn't his childhood best friend, and he also remembered Rayne as he had
last seen her, seventeen years earlier, when they had parted ways at London
Waterloo where she took the train to go to France.
Rayne would be thirty-five today, and Irina looked
like she was in her early twenties—she still carried a soft layer of baby fat
on her cheeks and along her jawline.
The area along her left cheekbone was an ugly, dark
red colour, which would definitely swell and bruise later on—thankfully, the
skin hadn't broken, and he ran the pad of his thumb against the injury; she
winced, and he noticed the healing cut on her lower lip, concealed with
dark-red lipstick. His gaze roamed over her, to notice once again the lightweight
jacket that sheathed her from the waist up, with closed buttons riding to her
throat; she couldn't be cold, not in the smouldering summer heat—she hid
bruises, and the fist slam today was not her first.
"Why do you let him do that to you?"
She blinked; her lips parted, but she didn't answer—he'd
forgotten she didn't speak English.

Good descriptions. I want to slam my fist into the other guy.
I love how nothing is at it seems in this story. Great six!
And, I wish it was that warm here. That's t-shirt and short weather. LOL
Man, I hope he gets his hands around THAT guys neck. Yes I refer to any beast THAT would hurt any living thing a THAT, not a who. Grrrr... I love his gentleness, and go in search of your SSS every Sunday. Cheers!
I love how smooth you're writing is. I wonder if she's somehow related to Rayne, or is just a really interesting doppelganger. By the way, I love the names Rayne and Irina.
Excellent 6.
Oh, my. The protective type always gets to me. I hope they team up to kick the snot out of the jerk who hurt her. Great job evoking emotions.
Can I join the "Ash, get that jerk!" club?
I'm really enjoying this story, by sixes. For a minute I thought Irina might just be the closest Russian or other language equivalent to Rayne. But the age knocks out that possibility. Plus Rayne would speak English, wouldn't she?
Congrats on the upcoming release!
What a vivid passage! Great writing!
Beautifully written. Love his compassion and the unresolved feelings that are surfacing.
Nicely done, Zee. I'm not participating this week, but wanted to stop by and check it out ;)
Powerful description, hope he protects her.
Love seeing his reaction to her and his protective instincts coming to the fore. Can't wait to read more!
Hm....I'm intrigued. Now I want to know the connection (if there is one) between the current woman and Rayne of his past.
Fantastic post...Really liked it.
Lol Gem - I wanna see him get his just desserts too (and fyi, he does get what he deserves!)
LOL Jessica - appearances are really deceiving in this one, indeed. :)
Haha, try wearing shorts in the chilly breeze we have blowing here - you'd be literally chilled to the bone!
Carmen, I totally agree! A man THAT acts this way is an animal!
Thanks for your lovely words - so glad you come over each week :) xoxo
Thank you Jess! Lol, there's a lot of mystery, and half-truths in this book, in these excerpts. Disclosure coming next week, promise! :)
Stephanie, I'm totally in love with Ash - the protective type makes me swoon, lol.
They don't exactly team up, but the guy does get what he deserves - this much I can say! :)
Lol Kate - everyone is cheering Ash on with this issue! :)
Lots of questions, innit? *wicked laugh* Answers coming soon - I think next week... *grin*
Thanks Lisa!
Thanks Layna. Ash is not only heroic, he's also a good guy *swoon*
Aww, thank you Carly! That is so nice of you to still stop by despite not participating! xoxo
Thanks Gemma - he's gonna do his best, I can assure that! :)
Thanks Angela! He's definitely protective, a true hero :)
Lol Cara - I wanted to get the reader to ask the questions you asked :) Guess I did my job then *BIG Grin*
Thanks Savannah! xoxo
especially like the "baby fat" line
Oh, now that's intriguing!
And, I think he should go and hit the other guy again! (I'm not usually so bloodthirsty, but really...)
Thanks for the shout out! :) You are wonderful.
I like him so much. He's chivalrous, smart, and observant. And you have me intrigued with the possible connection to his childhood friend. Wonderful!
Oh, he is so going to be her champion! Love it! Great six!
This plot's getting deliciously complex. :)
I don't think any woman who is abused has a good answer for why she let's it continue--whether she speaks English or not. But I hope his tenderness touches her enough that she thinks about the fact that she doesn't deserve it. A thoughtful six, Zee.
Nice six! Very curious to find out her connection to his friend. :)
I'm a sucker for the "is it her/him, or isnt' it" theme. Nice six, Zee :)
Oh man, that infuriates me as much as it does him. Great six, Zee, and thanks so much for the mention. :)
Love the 6!!! Oh the mystery!
Thanks Sue! I wanted to describe her appearance, and this line struck me when I pictured her in my mind :)
Lol Lorraine - if it were up to me, he'd beat that guy to a pulp. But like I said, he gets his just desserts... More on that next week :) xoxo
Monica, I think Ash is my most heroic hero to date (my, aren't we brainy today...LOL) :)
Yup yup, Jennifer! Champion to the rescue!! :)
Thanks Elin! :)
I agree with you, JM. Though Irina does have an answer... Disclosure coming next week... :)
Thanks Babette! Lol, that seems to be the burning question right now :)
Awww, that's awesome, Karla! I love that theme too, and had so much fun playing with this. Revelations coming up next week! :)
Siobhan, I know. I kept wanting to sock that guy one or two when I was writing this. The thought that he gets what he deserves later on kept me on the straight and narrow! :)
Lol. Thanks Sara - I was aiming for mystery in this first scene from the book :)
