Today I have the pleasure of welcoming back a lovely friend and a fabulous author, Jessica E. Subject! Jessica's latest book The Zurian Child released this month, and let me tell you - this is the series that converted me to loving sci-fi romance!
I just love her gorgeous cover - don't you? :)
I'll let Jessica tell you more about the storyline, and how this series came into being!
The Origin of The Zurian Child
Thank you so much to Zee for having me on your blog today. I truly appreciate all of the help and support you have given me.
Although I’ve been writing various stories and newsletters since the age of eleven, I didn’t start writing with the hopes of publication until almost four years ago. My daughter, five years old at the time, was in kindergarten and absolutely hated reading. She would cry, scream, and carry on every time we sat down to read the beginning readers she brought home from school. It broke my heart that she didn’t enjoy reading as much as I did, so I had to do something.
Since she shares a love of superheroes with my husband and I, I decided to write her a story based on humans with extraordinary powers. She helped me to name the main character—Katrina—but the rest was left up to me. I thought long and hard about this story, probably too much for what the story should have been. I had dreams, at night and during the day, wrote notes, and started writing.
Unfortunately for my daughter, the story quickly became something she won’t be able to read until she is much older.
So as not to forget my original goal, I wrote my daughter another story. And I’m proud to say she now reads above grade level.
And my story continued to develop. I changed the time period when the book started, killed off and took out a lot of characters, and added a few new ones. My superheroes became aliens, and the research began. I had to put myself out there, and contact professionals, law enforcement officers, the Canadian Forces, and more. I researched planets to find just the right one to use as a reference for Alectrona and eventually finished writing the story.
But when I began looking into how to get my story published, I learned my journey had just begun, and I had so much to learn. After some great advice, I joined a critique group, and found online critique partners. The story went through so many rounds of edits, revisions, and rewrites. I lost count after twenty. And then the story went out on submission. The rest is history.
The Zurian Child Blurb
Lindsay Beckett longed to be reunited with her first love, Quinn Montgomery, until she learns the secret that sent him fleeing from her in the first place. He’s an alien, a Hemera, and she’s half-Hemera herself. As if that wasn’t enough to ruin her dreams of a perfect life, when their child is born, they discover she fulfills a prophesy told twenty light years away and many years ago. Lindsay wants to ignore it, until her husband is murdered and suddenly believing becomes a matter of survival.
Lindsay and her young daughter are forced to rely on another Hemera, her husband’s partner and best friend, Bryce Beuermann as more and more of the Hemera are slaughtered. Bryce will do anything to help his best friend’s widow—including suppressing his own deep feelings for her. But he must prove they can trust him, even pretending he doesn’t want her with all his heart.
